Cairns (Rhymes with Vans)

The flight from Brisbane (“Brizzie”) to Cairns was about two hours. We dropped our stuff at the hotel and immediately set out for the skyrail tram through the tropical rainforest. The tram takes you up above the canopy and up the mountain to a small town called Kuranda. I'm not a big fan of heights, but I loved the trip, looking down into the trees, huge ferns, water falls. There are stops along the way where you can get out and walk around a bit in the rainforest.

I really wanted to put my feet in the ocean, but I was warned that people don't do that here due to the estuarine crocs. They do have a beautiful, artistically designed shallow public pool, but folks do not swim in the ocean here. In additional to crocs, there are deadly stinging jellies.

This is supposed to be the dry season, but everyone keeps commenting on how unusually cold and rainy it is. It has rained every day. This is not a place for surfers; the Great Barrier Reer blocks all of the waves. Of course we got rained on in the rainforest. After putting on dry warm clothes, we ventured out to find some dinner and found that Cairns is a happening party town. We spend some time listening to a reggae band at a place called Salt One. We wandered around the shoreline and main strip. There was a beautiful shallow swimming pool decorated with fish sculptures and “rocks” for kids to climb upon. We had a yummy dinner at a kebab place (Oasis), went back to the Salt for a bit more music and wine, then returned to the hotel.
